Reading and poverty go hand in hand. Just because kids from poor families aren't exposed to much reading for fun and a wide range of words. I like this article because it talks about how they are helping build background knowledge for these children and making it fun. They are also using this trip to tie in mathematics, vocabulary, and social skills. I don't think this particular project would work everywhere but some variation of it could do wonders.
